Eugen Sandow who started bodybuilding as we know it today is buried in Roehampton Vale Cemetary, London

Eugen Sandow’s body was buried in Roehampton Vale Cemetery, London. His grave was unmarked for over 70 years, as requested by his wife, as he’s said to have died from syphilis – which affected his heart, thereby giving him a stroke – from having too much sex with other women (and possibly men).

You can see his grave here at FindAGrave.com.

You can also find out more about his grave and life in this short four-minute clip entitled “Searching for Sandow.”

You can also read a lot more on Eugen Sandow and his life on Wikipedia here.

This man had a healthy motive and balanced approach to lifting weights (and exercise in general) which is not generally seen in gyms (world-wide) these days. We can all learn a lot from him. If you’re into weight training, that is.

You can also see him on the Mr Olympia trophies. Here is a picture of Phil Heath who is the current Mr Olympia. As you can see, there is big difference between Eugen Sandow’s body and Phil Heath’s.

Lastly, here is a rare clip showing Eugen Sandow posing. It was filmed on 6 March, 1894, in Edison’s Black Maria studio.
